The collaborative partnership between Calò and Simon was forged at two Puglia residencies in 2023 and 2024, during which the two saxophonists focused on different approaches to electroacoustic improvisation. Playing our festival in a saxophone duo format, they navigate the interferences of sound objects and electronic loopbacks.

The Apulian sax player, composer, arranger and conductor Pasquale Calò is the founder of the Improvisers Collective and the artistic platform Mediterraneo Radicale. As a composer and conductor, he is known for his work in the Torino-Milano Improvisers Orchestra, Mediterraneo Radicale Orchestra, European Improvisers Orchestra and the Orchestra Mediterranea degli Improvvisatori.

About our this year’s Artist-in-Residence: The versatile saxophonist, electronic music artist and composer Boštjan Simon is the leader of There Be Monsters and a member of Etceteral, Velkro, Litošt, Zhlehtet, Robert Jukič Kvartet, Kristijan Krajnčan’s “Med se iskri v temi”, Orkester Brez Meja and Arkos. Since 2017 he has been the artistic co-director of the International Meeting of Saxophonists SAXGO in Nova Gorica, and since 2022 the artistic director of the experimental music festival Sound Explicit. February 2024 saw the release of Simon’s solo album, Fermented Reality, an electroacoustic exploration of the symbiosis between the saxophone and a system of modular synthesizers.
