Asher Gamedze Quartet (ZA, VB)
South African drummer and percussionist Asher Gamedze has made his mark with a potent mixture of rich local musical traditions, free improvisation and contemporary jazz idioms laced with radical social and political thought. A self-taught musician with an impressive roster of collaborators (among others, Angel Bat Dawid and Nduduz Makhathini), Gamedze’s watershed year on his journey of tapping, pounding and general noisemaking was 2020, when his critically acclaimed debut album, Dialectic Soul, came out. It was followed by Two Duets: Outside Work two years later. 2023 saw the release of another remarkable work, Turbulence and Pulse: the semi-improvised, temperately-flowing album underscored by spiritual echoes came out on International Anthem – the preeminent authority on progressive jazz practices. Last year, this same label went on to release Constitution, an epically sprawling, communal and all but orchestral double album by the ten-piece ensemble Asher Gamedze & The Black Lungs.
