Makhathini is a leading exponent of today’s South African jazz – a pianist, composer, philosopher, and Zulu healer. He exploded onto the international scene in 2020 with his debut release for the venerated Blue Note Records, Modes of Communication: Letters from the Underworlds, which to connoisseurs revealed hints of the musical legacies of pianists Abdullah Ibrahim and McCoy Tyner.
uNomkhubulwane (2024) is his latest and third release on Blue Note. A three-movement tour de force, it occasionally veers into classic jazz convention, being at its most convincing in moments of soaring elation and references to the architects of spiritual jazz, such as John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders. His work is a way of restoring the sophistication and self-sufficiency of African culture, reclaiming the heritage of Africa stolen during colonialism. ...
