Nduduzo Makhathini
July 5 @ 21:30

Nduduzo Makhathini (ZA)
One of the leading figures of today’s South African jazz – a pianist, composer, philosopher and Zulu healer. Nduduzo Makhathini exploded onto the international scene in 2020 with his first debut for the venerated Blue Note Records, Modes of Communication: Letters from the Underworlds. If the catchphrase “spiritual jazz” was becoming a trendy buzz word at the time, Makhathini’s music is in no way bending to the current fads. uNomkhubulwane (2024) is his latest and third release on Blue Note. A three-movement tour de force, it occasionally veers into classic jazz milieu, being at its most convincing in moments of soaring elation and references to the architects of spiritual jazz, from John Coltrane to Pharoah Sanders. An hour of impeccable sound, ambitious yet airy arrangements and rare but essential hints of shamanism!
