SUMMARY:Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat
DESCRIPTION:Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat \nDirected by: Johan Grimonprez\nBelgium\, France\, Netherlands\, 2024\, DCP\, 150′ \n“There is what Congolese novelist In Koli Jean Bofane refers to in the film as an ever-evolving ‘algorithm of Congo Inc’: an algorithm perfected somewhere between Washington\, London\, Brussels and Kigali\, where Congo Inc. has become the global supplier delivering strategic minerals to take war into space. The thesis of Congo Inc. is that every major war largely consumed and was able to be fought thanks to minerals that were provided by the Congo. In the First World War it was rubber; during the Second World War the high-grade uranium; in Vietnam it was the copper of the endless bullets that were shipped there; and now the strategic materials to take war into space.” (Johan Grimonprez) \nUnited Nations\, 1961: the Global South ignites a political earthquake\, jazz musicians Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach crash the Security Council\, Nikita Khrushchev bangs his shoe\, and the U.S. State Department swings into action\, sending jazz ambassador Louis Armstrong to the Congo to deflect attention from the CIA-backed coup. Director Johan Grimonprez explores a moment when jazz\, colonialism\, and espionage collided. \nMonday\, 30. 6. at 20.00\nPre-event\nKosovel Hall\n5 EUR\nBUY TICKET

DESCRIPTION:Pino Ninfa: Jazz Spirit\, photography exhibition \nCurated by: Žiga Koritnik \nItalian photographer Pino Ninfa’s exhibition is a journey into the world of jazz. The series of black-and-white photographs is defined by an exceptionally strong narrativeness\, the stories of musicians and their work\, as well as the events before\, during and after a concert. In addition to covering major music festivals\, he dedicates himself to developing multimedia projects with various musicians. He served as the official photographer of the Heineken Jammin’ Festival for many years and has covered several editions of the Umbria Jazz Festival. He has showcased his work in various museums in Italy and internationally\, including the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa\, the Fondazione Benetton Studi Ricerche in Treviso and the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome. \n \n \n1 July (opening at 7.30 pm) – 5 Sept\nSmall Gallery\nPre-events\nadmission free \n\nSponsor of the Small Gallery

The Apulian sax player\, composer\, arranger and conductor Pasquale Calò is the founder of the Improvisers Collective and the artistic platform Mediterraneo Radicale. As a composer and conductor\, he is known for his work in the Torino-Milano Improvisers Orchestra\, Mediterraneo Radicale Orchestra\, European Improvisers Orchestra and the Orchestra Mediterranea degli Improvvisatori. \nOne of the three Arist-In-Residence concerts. \n...More ...About our this year’s Artist-in-Residence\nThe versatile saxophonist\, electronic music artist and composer Boštjan Simon is the leader of There Be Monsters and a member of Etceteral\, Velkro\, Litošt\, Zhlehtet\, Robert Jukič Kvartet\, Kristijan Krajnčan’s “Med se iskri v temi”\, Orkester Brez Meja and Arkos. He has a total of twenty gold records and three gold albums\, as well as an impressive songbook of jazz standards. \nIt goes without saying that working with a roster of artists as diverse as Ornette Coleman\, John Zorn\, Joni Mitchell\, and David Bowie calls for tremendous musical versatility and the corresponding technical virtuosity. He cites Miles Davis\, Wes Montgomery and The Beatles as having the biggest impact on his music. \nMetheny has been a key player in fusion jazz for the past four decades\, with a broad community of followers\, also satisfying their preferences for experimentation. We have consistently followed his artistic development\, hosting Metheny with different line-ups at the Jazz Festival Ljubljana three times\, most recently nine years ago. The Pat Metheny Group\, active since 1978 with various changes in personnel\, has decisively shaped the development of the jazz fusion genre and allowed him to evolve his distinctive lyricism under the auspices of ECM Records. \n...More ...\nHe composes contemporary classical and film music\, dreamy solo ballads\, and virtuoso pieces\, creating a canon of new standards\, while also keeping an eye out for young new talents with whom to share his vision. Thus\, in 2016\, which many in the US see as the advent of a new dark age\, Metheny started the Side-Eye project. The name is slang for “raising an eyebrow\,” being sceptical\, distrustful\, or disapproving\, which is how the world has been looking at the US since 2016. Among the first to be invited to his home studio were two brilliant musicians\, pianist James Francis and drummer Marcus Gilmore; their Side-Eye NYC (V1.IV) album instantly earned a Grammy nomination.\nThe latest core lineup of the Side-Eye III+ project consists of Chris Fishman\, a drummer-turned-pianist from the Louis Cole (Knower) orbit and the rising drumming star Joe Dyson\, who brings New Orleans–style vehemence to the trio and has inspired Metheny to write several new compositions specifically for this trio. At Ljubljana Jazz Festival the non-classical guitar–piano–drums trio will be joined by Californian musical up-and-comer on bass\, Jermaine Paul. At the end of February\, their latest album was released on Pat Metheny’s newly founded label\, Uniquity Music Their\, which from now on will house of Metheny’s entire catalogue from 1984 and onward.\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row hide_bg_image_on_tablet=”” hide_bg_image_on_mobile=”” css=”.vc_custom_1774520466972{margin-top: 35px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qef5Ui5qo6Q&list=PLnM2cuYLcpQ4E4Os-NhFFeFlosbuRc4Ks&index=2″ css=”.vc_custom_1775119546262{margin-bottom: 80px !important;}”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmH_e5IS6DQ&t=5s” css=”.vc_custom_1775119563850{margin-bottom: 80px !important;}”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msypyORj4-g&t=19s” css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column icons_position=”left”][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The moment she first stepped onto the stage\, she did so with total confidence\, forging her own style – uncompromising and unrestrained. Over six decades\, she has moved effortlessly across genres\, performing at the Sanremo Festival\, recording over 20 albums\, and acting in theatre and film – all by following her heart\, in her own words. She has received three Grammy Awards and a Tony Award for her role as the Good Witch in the Broadway musical The Wiz. \nThroughout her career\, she has been driven by personal integrity\, professional autonomy\, and boundless creativity\, and has also given a voice to the voiceless as a UN Goodwill Ambassador. Twenty years ago\, she founded her own record label\, DDB Records\, and became a producer. She holds honorary doctorates from prestigious music universities and was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame. Her musical credentials read like a who’s who of jazz royalty: Sonny Rollins\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Horace Silver\, Dexter Gordon\, Max Roach\, Ray Charles\, B. B. King… \n...More ...\nJust as she once received advice from her role models Ella Fitzgerald\, Sarah Vaughan\, and Betty Carter\, who taught her to be fearless and command the stage\, she now passes on her experience and knowledge to younger generations. Through her Woodshed Network programme\, Dee Dee has recently mentored young female jazz musicians\, sharing her wisdom on surviving in the male-dominated music industry and standing up to discrimination and misogyny. Her protégées include Jazzmeia Horn and Lakecia Benjamin.\nIn this spirit\, and as a direct response to the Gaza war\, she formed the quartet We Exist!\, bringing together young female musicians – pianist Carmen Staaf\, bassist Rosa Brunello\, as well as drummers Shirazette Tinnin and Evita Polidoro. The band’s repertoire\, opposing patriarchy and social injustice\, is like a journey through the history of songs of rebellion and long-unheeded warnings from the past. Dee Dee Bridgewater\, now a musical icon herself\, pays tribute to the timeless luminaries Roberta Flack\, Nina Simone\, Billie Holiday\, and Abbey Lincoln\, reaching for the most haunting songs in the jazz canon\, such as Tryin’ Times\, Danger Zone\, Strange Fruit\, Mississippi Goddam\, I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free – all the while inviting the audience to listen to the lyrics. Truly listen.\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row hide_bg_image_on_tablet=”” hide_bg_image_on_mobile=”” css=”.vc_custom_1774520466972{margin-top: 35px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWHNexCCTfI&t=2437s” css=”.vc_custom_1775043073905{margin-bottom: 20px !important;}”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ILQSMDI5Ak&t=50s” css=”.vc_custom_1775043100784{margin-bottom: 20px !important;}”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/live/IcA6NvcraME?t=1259s” css=”.vc_custom_1775043125971{margin-bottom: 20px !important;}”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row hide_bg_image_on_tablet=”” hide_bg_image_on_mobile=”” css=”.vc_custom_1774520466972{margin-top: 35px !important;}”][vc_column icons_position=”left”][vc_column_text css=””][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Cécile McLorin Salvant
DESCRIPTION:Cécile McLorin Salvant (US/FR) \nCécile McLorin Salvant\, vocal; Sullivan Fortner\, piano; Yasushi Nakamura\, double bass; Kyle Poole\, drums \nOne of the most distinctive voices of her generation – a singer\, storyteller\, composer and visual artist – is making her Ljubljana debut! Cécile McLorin Salvant is a vocalist and an eclectic curator tracing connections between blues\, theatre\, jazz and chanson. She has received three consecutive Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album: For One to Love (2015)\, Dreams and Daggers (2017) and The Window (2018). Among her many accolades\, one of the most notable is her victory at the prestigious Thelonious Monk Competition\, which she won at just twenty-one. \nEverything touched by McLorin Salvant’s voice radiates a distinctive intellectual and lucid playfulness. She turns traditional jazz standards on their head\, going against the grain and thoroughly reworking and refreshing them with her playful interpretations. ...More ...Her music often incorporates rawer\, less polished textures\, leading some to draw comparisons with Fiona Apple. Her latest album\, Mélusine (2023)\, is sung predominantly in French\, while also drawing on Occitan\, English\, and Haitian Kreyòl. Her most recent project is a multi-layered musical tale in the form of a cantata titled Ogresse\, which is being developed into a feature-length animated film – one she will direct herself! \n \n\nWednesday\, 2 July at 20.30\nKrižanke\nDouble bill\n20:30 Cécile McLorin Salvant\n22:00 Meshell Ndegeocello\nPresale (until 1 July inclusively) EUR 40\, 35*\, regular prices EUR 45\, 40*\n*visitors aged under 25\, over 65 and pensioners\nBUY TICKET \n[vc_row_inner hide_bg_image_on_tablet=”” hide_bg_image_on_mobile=”” css=”.vc_custom_1745910177483{padding-bottom: 100px !important;}”][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiPJjYTMYKk” css=””][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luIa4rd_wV0″ css=””][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”” css=””][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner]\n[vc_row_inner hide_bg_image_on_tablet=”” hide_bg_image_on_mobile=”” css=”.vc_custom_1745910177483{padding-bottom: 100px !important;}”][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iw0b4cUAjWI&ab_channel=ARTEConcert” css=””][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TIaExrONUI” css=””][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”” css=””][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner]

SUMMARY:Meshell Ndegeocello
DESCRIPTION:Meshell Ndegeocello (US) \nMeshell Ndegeocello\, bass\, keys\, vocals; Justin Hicks\, vocals; Jake Sherman\, hammond organ; Chris Bruce\, guitars; Abraham Rounds\, drums\, vocals \nMeshell Ndegeocello is a bass player above all else. A bass player who is also a vocalist\, a poet\, rapper\, political activist… as well as the spark that ignited the neo-soul movement. An uncategorizable artist of great prowess and a brilliant instrumentalist with impressive credentials\, Meshell excels at everything from soul\, funk\, R&B\, hip-hop\, rock and\, of course\, jazz. Ndegeocello started out on her career in the 1980s\, recorded with Herbie Hancock and Madonna\, Tony Allen and Chaka Khan in the 1990s\, and played alongside the Rolling Stones and Alanis Morissette. Known to be a member of and an advocate for the queer community\, her MTV hit\, If That’s Your Boyfriend (He Wasn’t Last Night)\, is regarded as a provocative post-feminist anthem. \n...More ... Ever since her debut album\, Plantation Lullabies (1993)\, her musical genius and political activism have been guided by critical thought and a reflection on radical alternatives. In this context\, her latest project and third Grammy win\, No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin\, can be seen as the culmination of her artistic work. Marking his centennial\, it is an in-depth homage to the writer and essayist James Baldwin\, author of incisive quotes and a trenchant critic of systemic racism. In live performances – dominated by Ndegeocello’s throbbing bass and the Hammond organ accompaniment – the weighty references to James Baldwin\, Audra Lorde and Martin Luther King Jr. patch up the holes in America’s frayed collective memory. \n \nWednesday\, 2 July at 22.00\nDouble bill\n20:30 Cécile McLorin Salvant\n22:00 Meshell Ndegeocello\nKrižanke\, presale (until 1 July inclusively) EUR 40\, 35*\, regular prices EUR 45\, 40*\n*visitors aged under 25\, over 65 and pensioners \nBUY TICKET\n[vc_row_inner hide_bg_image_on_tablet=”” hide_bg_image_on_mobile=”” css=”.vc_custom_1745910177483{padding-bottom: 100px !important;}”][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdFqNtHO4nE&ab_channel=ARTEConcert” css=””][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOJOVyKjWAI” css=””][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBuOd2MzdT4″ css=””][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner] \n \n

SUMMARY:Jazz in Books
DESCRIPTION:Jazz in Books \nBooks about music are never literally “about music”. They are about the people who compose\, mould\, and play music\, and they are about the (social) contexts\, or rather\, environments\, in which music is made. While these environments are physical\, they are invariably also much more. Books about music are therefore books about communities\, about scenes\, about collaborations and solidarities\, about the social conditions of a particular time… and\, just as importantly\, about intriguing individuals. Consequently\, if we’re interested in certain musics (in our case\, diverse jazz practices)\, we cannot just listen to them. We also have to read them. \nEvent takes place in cooperation with Vodnikova domačija (Vodnik Homestead). \nThe reading corner with books about jazz music was made possible by the Ljubljana UNESCO City of Literature office. \n \nThursday – Saturday\, 3 – 5. 7.\nPark\nAdmission free

SUMMARY:Tarbaby feat. David Murray
DESCRIPTION:Tarbaby feat. David Murray (US) \nDavid Murray\, sax; Orrin Evans\, piano; Eric Revis; double bass; Nasheet Waits\, drums \nWhen it comes to the sheer breath of this man’s creative output and his longevity on the jazz scene\, Murray is practically without equal. A brilliant composer and a totally unique improviser\, Murray is also a founding member of the revolutionary World Saxophone Quartet and has released over 160 (!) albums in his own right over the last five decades. A doyen of avant-garde jazz\, Murray won the coveted Grammy Award in the Best Instrumental Performance category for Blues for Coltrane (1989). \nHis most recent project\, Francesca (2024)\, was chosen as No. 2 Best Jazz Album of 2024 by The New York Times. It was Tarbaby that topped this chart with the album You Think This America. For nearly two decades\, the group’s core trio has been delivering a distinct perspective on social and cultural-political realities\, marked by unrelenting intensity and uncompromising execution. ...More ...They engage with complex themes through carefully crafted concepts and timely contextualization — as exemplified on their 2013 album Fanon\, inspired by the work of philosopher\, revolutionary\, psychiatrist\, and anti-colonial writer Frantz Fanon. \n \nTarbaby and the roster of collaborators with whom they develop musical ideas\, most notably Oliver Lake\, Nicholas Payton\, JD Allen\, Ambrose Akinmusire and Marc Ducret\, share a common sense of responsibility towards music and tradition. Their latest release features arrangements of David Murray’s compositions\, which is why it seemed only logical to join these two eruptive forces into a supergroup exclusively for the Jazz Festival Ljubljana – Tarbaby feat. SUMMARY:Kavčič/Debelić Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Kavčič/Debelić Quartet \nAljoša Kavčič\, piano; Luka Debelić\, guitar; Tjan Šoštarič\, double bass; Tijan Grašič\, drums \nThe Kavčič / Debelić Quartet is a fresh jazz combo that brings together four musicians of the younger generation. All alumni of the Conservatory of Music and Ballet in Ljubljana\, Luka\, Aljoša and Tijan started working together on different projects. At LJF Aljoša and Luka will premiere their own compositions\, which the Kavčič/Debelić Quartet will record later this year. The group’s sound is rooted in contemporary jazz\, with an emphasis on classically inspired harmony\, freer form and elements of groove derived from mainstream jazz. The music is open to innovation\, while maintaining respect for tradition – the quartet explores how complex structures can coexist with rhythmic clarity and flashes of inspiration. \nIn collaboration with the Academy of Music. \n \n\nThursday\, 3 July at 20.30\nPark\, Old Tree Stage\nDay pass without the concert in the Linhart Hall (Tarbaby feat. SUMMARY:Fresh Dust
DESCRIPTION:Fresh Dust (SI\, PT\, FR) \nBenoit Delbecq\, piano\, preparation; Susana Santos Silva\, trumpet; Samo Šalamon\, acoustic guitar\, Jaka Berger\, drums\, preparation \nFollowing the release of Hilarious Experts in 2019\, the Fresh Dust project\, helmed by Jaka Berger\, is back in a greatly reconfigured form. Now transformed into a quartet featuring first-class international personnel\, its (almost) free improvisations\, for which Berger has written thematic frameworks devised as a mixture of notation and graphics\, place it within the context of contemporary free jazz.\nHalf of the team is composed of two featured artists – Portuguese trumpeter and composer Susana Santos Silva\, “one of the most exciting improvisers in the world” (Downbeat)\, and award-winning Parisian pianist and composer Benoit Delbecq\, a trend-setter who injects the spirit of jazz into John Cage’s prepared piano. The Slovenian members are Samo Šalamon\, one of the nation’s most distinguished guitarists\, and Jaka Berger\, a drummer and percussionist widely known for his stylistic versatility. By means of extended techniques and preparations\, the new quartet breaks the traditional mould of free music. \n \nThursday\, 3 July at 22.30\nCD Club\nDay pass without the concert in the Linhart Hall (Tarbaby feat. DESCRIPTION:Flock (GB) \nBex Burch\, percussion\, xylophone; Danalogue\, \,synths\, piano; Sarathy Korwar\, drums\, percussion; Al MacSween\, synths\, piano; Tamar Osborn\, baritone sax\, flute\, clarinet \nFlock is an all-star dream team\, or rather a supergroup\, from Britain’s new jazz scene. It is a powerful alliance between some of UK’s finest musicians: a prominent drummer and percussionist of the younger generation\, Sarathy Korwar (with impressive releases on a major independent record label\, Ninja Tune)\, Bex Burch (whose 2023 debut solo outing was released by International Anthem)\, Danalogue (known as the cosmic keyboardist with The Comet Is Coming)\, Tamar Osborn (who leads the Collocutor project and is a member of a Dele Sosimi ensemble) and Al MacSween (member of Kefaya\, etc.). \nIn 2024\, the collective released their sophomore album\, titled simply Flock II\, on the renowned Strut label. If their debut was recorded in the space of a single session\, the follow-up took more time and is a semi-improvised undertaking\, that ranges from intense to hypnotic\, from insistent rhythmic textures to ambient. \n \nFriday\, 4 July at 19.30\nPark Main Stage\nDay pass for CD Park + CD Club presale (until 1 July inclusively) EUR 15\, regular price EUR 18\nBUY TICKET \n[vc_row_inner hide_bg_image_on_tablet=”” hide_bg_image_on_mobile=”” css=”.vc_custom_1745910177483{padding-bottom: 100px !important;}”][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRrh9zUuSac&ab_channel=ARTEConcert” css=””][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JTP7oQMnUo” css=””][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”” css=””][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner] \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Yazz Ahmed Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Yazz Ahmed Quartet (GB) \nYazz Ahmed\, trumpet\, flugelhorn; Ralph Wyld\, vibraphone; Flo Moore\, bass; Josh Blackmore\, drums \nIf we had to summarize the British-Bahraini trumpeter Yazz Ahmed’s myriad musical forays and shifts into a short descriptive framework\, we could say that her work combines jazz\, Arabic traditions and electronic sounds into a fascinating assemblage\, which has been described as “psychedelic Arabic jazz”. Her versatility is reflected in the richly varied collaborations that have seen her perform with the likes of Radiohead\, Lee Scratch Perry\, Transglobal Underground\, Arturo O’Farrill\, Natacha Atlas\, Obongjayar\, etc. \nA prominent protagonist of the exciting “London’s new jazz” scene\, Yazz released her debut album\, Finding My Way Home\, in 2011. It was her second album\, La Saboteuse that truly made a major impact\, clocking up multiple rave reviews\, including Jazz Album of the Year in The Wire magazine....More ...The result of a long-standing collaboration with Tomorrow’s Warriors\, a key initiative of the bedrock of British music\, Ahmed’s third album Polyhymnia was a hugely ambitious project\, featuring an extended ensemble of 25 musicians while “celebrating female courage and determination”. The newly released A Paradise In The Hold is perhaps Yazz’s most accomplished album to date\, a thrilling fusion of Arabic classical music and jazz takes with echoes of UK’s contemporary scene. \n \nFriday\, 4 July at 21.00\nPark Main Stage\nDay pass for CD Park + CD Club presale (until 1 July inclusively) EUR 15\, regular price EUR 18\nBUY TICKET \n[vc_row_inner hide_bg_image_on_tablet=”” hide_bg_image_on_mobile=”” css=”.vc_custom_1745910177483{padding-bottom: 100px !important;}”][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sZqmtNac5Y&ab_channel=ARTEConcert” css=””][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeP0o1U_Y_k” css=””][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”” css=””][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner] \n \nA Paradise In The Hold by Yazz Ahmed

SUMMARY:Sc'ööf
DESCRIPTION:Sc’ööf (CH) \nElio Amberg\, tenor sax; Noah Arnold\, alto sax; Christian Zemp\, guitar; Vincent Glanzmann\, drums \nAn exploratory band from Lucerne\, Sc’ööf have developed a sonic language of their very own\, both close to radical and wholly adventurous. With a distinctive arsenal of two saxophones\, drums & laptop\, guitar and electronic gadgets\, the quartet transplants traditional jazz instruments into an avant-garde setting. \nFollowing a refreshing\, sometimes brazen and vibrantly disjointed approach\, Sc’ööf build bridges between jazz and various popular music styles such as dub\, breakbeat\, hip-hop\, noise and punk. They create an odd yet compelling mixture that has sometimes been referred to as “acoustic glitch music”. A dynamic sonic journey where atonal melodies intertwine with complex rhythms to create hypnotic\, repetitive and – thanks to the physical energy of their playing – intense structures. \n \nFriday\, 4 July at 22.30\nCD Club\nDay pass for CD Park + CD Club presale (until 1 July inclusively) EUR 15\, regular price EUR 18\nBUY TICKET \n[vc_row_inner hide_bg_image_on_tablet=”” hide_bg_image_on_mobile=”” css=”.vc_custom_1745910177483{padding-bottom: 100px !important;}”][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvVGcDHjgTU&ab_channel=ARTEConcert” css=””][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCB8z4Xioms” css=””][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”” css=””][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner] \n \nWeaving Elephants by Sc’ööf with Elio Amberg\, Noah Arnold\, Christian Zemp\, Amadeus Fries

DESCRIPTION:aja monet (US) \naja monet\, lead vocals; Brian Hargrove\, piano; Micah Collier\, double bass; Zach Morrow\, drums \naja monet is a multidisciplinary artist in the finest sense of the word – a poet\, writer\, spoken-word virtuosa\, cultural worker\, community organiser and activist based in Brooklyn. Her writings address the themes of injustice\, persecution\, resistance and systemic violence from East New York to Palestine (she has been deeply involved in discourse surrounding the occupation over the last ten years)\, but also belonging\, motherhood and notions of community. At age 19\, she was the youngest ever Nuyorican Poets Café Grand Slam champion. \nHer debut album\, when the poems do what they do\, (recorded in collaboration with a roster of esteemed musicians\, most notably Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah\, and also Samora Pinderhughes\, Lonnie Holley\, Marcus Gilmore…) is a mind-altering spoken-word cry\, centering around themes of Black resistance\, love\, and the inexhaustible quest for joy....More ... “These aren’t poems for poets\, but poems for everyone.” Last year\, it was nominated for a Grammy Best Spoken Word Poetry Album. Furthermore\, the core of his musical expression\, rests on a solid foundation. He studied jazz at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York\, where – perhaps more importantly than the degree he never completed – he met Robert Glasper\, a frequent collaborator\, through whom Bilal became involved with artists such as Q-Tip and Mos Def. \nA singer\, songwriter\, multi instrumentalist and producer considered one of the United States’ most distinctive musicians at the intersection of contemporary R&B\, neo soul and jazz\, Bilal is a key innovator in contemporary African American music. Acclaimed for his wide vocal range and improvisational skills\, as well as his ability to blend and seamlessly transition between genres\, he has garnered particular praise for his unique\, unforgettable live performances. \n...More ...\nHis debut album\, 1st Born Second (2001)\, was released under the guidance of producers including Dr. Dre\, James Poyser\, and J Dilla. Any attempt to list all of his collaborators would be needless\, but it remains important to note that during the pivotal late 1990s\, Bilal was deeply immersed in New York’s vibrant rap and neo soul scene. His invaluable dedication earned him a place in the experimental collective The Soulquarians – a group of artists blending jazz\, soul\, and hip hop influences (alongside D’Angelo\, Erykah Badu\, Questlove\, Mos Def\, Talib Kweli\, J Dilla\, and Raphael Saadiq\, among others). This truly unique\, if not revolutionary\, collective redefined American Black popular music and left an enduring legacy of musical innovation.\nAs a featured artist on Kendrick Lamar’s song These Walls (as well as several other tracks on the album To Pimp a Butterfly)\, Bilal shares a Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Performance\, while his performance with The Roots is widely regarded as one of the most engaging in the entire Tiny Desk series. His most recent album\, Adjust Brightness\, came out last year. While all of this already sounds impressive\, it offers only a brief glimpse into the remarkable credentials of this singular artist.\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row hide_bg_image_on_tablet=”” hide_bg_image_on_mobile=”” css=”.vc_custom_1774520466972{margin-top: 35px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eB4oFu4BtQ8″ css=”.vc_custom_1774951601002{margin-bottom: 20px !important;}”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nB7fhyqh0IM&list=RDnB7fhyqh0IM” css=”.vc_custom_1774951606027{margin-bottom: 20px !important;}”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgSjKelFElE&list=RDsgSjKelFElE&start_radio=1&t=6s” css=”.vc_custom_1774951611196{margin-bottom: 20px !important;}”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row hide_bg_image_on_tablet=”” hide_bg_image_on_mobile=”” css=”.vc_custom_1774520466972{margin-top: 35px !important;}”][vc_column icons_position=”left”][vc_column_text css=””][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

DESCRIPTION:Freeflow: An Improvisational Mosaic (SI\, IT) \nVid Luka Narea\, double bass; Anže Kristan\, drums; Giovanni Nevyjel\, trumpet; Yannis Maizan\, saxophones \nFreeflow features four musicians\, immersed in the art of free improvisation. Rooted in spontaneity\, their performance is built by improvisational passages with thoughtfully selected melodies and brief composed pieces which serve as conceptual anchors\, providing a loose framework and emotional contour for the improvisation that flows freely around them. The concert unfolds as a fluid journey\, where the music is shaped in real-time\, guided by the collective intuition of the performers. The structure blends the unpredictable beauty of improvisation with moments of intentional phrasing and melody. Freeflow invites audiences into a concert experience that celebrates both the spontaneity of creation and the coherence of a carefully crafted emotional landscape. \nIn collaboration with the Sploh institute. \n \nSaturday\, 5 July at 19.30\nPark\, Old Tree Stage\nDay pass without the concert in the Linhart Hall (aja monet)\, presale (until 1 July inclusively) EUR 15\, regular price EUR 18\nDay pass with the concert in Linhart Hall (aja monet)\, presale (until 1 July inclusively) EUR 35\, 28*\, regular prices EUR 38\, 32*\n*visitors aged under 25\, over 65 and pensioners\nBUY TICKET

SUMMARY:Asher Gamedze Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Asher Gamedze Quartet (ZA\, VB) \nAsher Gamedze\, drums; Byron Wallen\, trumpet; Pat Cleaver\, bass; Piero Bittolo Bon\, saxophone \nSouth African drummer and percussionist Asher Gamedze has made his mark with a potent mixture of rich local musical traditions\, free improvisation and contemporary jazz idioms laced with radical social and political thought. \nA self-taught musician with an impressive roster of collaborators (among others\, Angel Bat Dawid and Nduduz Makhathini)\, Gamedze’s watershed year on his journey of tapping\, pounding and general noisemaking was 2020\, when his critically acclaimed debut album\, Dialectic Soul\, came out. It was followed by Two Duets: Outside Work two years later. 2023 saw the release of another remarkable work\, Turbulence and Pulse: the semi-improvised\, temperately-flowing album underscored by spiritual echoes came out on International Anthem – the preeminent authority on progressive jazz practices. ...More ...Last year\, this same label went on to release Constitution\, an epically sprawling\, communal and all but orchestral double album by the ten-piece ensemble Asher Gamedze & The Black Lungs.\n \nGamedze’s work consistently engages with the themes of resistance and anti-colonialism\, aiming to challenge the notion of culture as a static entity. \n \nSaturday\, 5 July at 20.00\nPark Main Stage\nDay pass without the concert in the Linhart Hall (aja monet)\, presale (until 1 July inclusively) EUR 15\, regular price EUR 18\nDay pass with the concert in Linhart Hall (aja monet)\, presale (until 1 July inclusively) EUR 35\, 28*\, regular prices EUR 38\, 32*\n*visitors aged under 25\, over 65 and pensioners\nBUY TICKET \n[vc_row_inner hide_bg_image_on_tablet=”” hide_bg_image_on_mobile=”” css=”.vc_custom_1745910177483{padding-bottom: 100px !important;}”][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgS7mLmWtJ0&ab_channel=ARTEConcert” css=””][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_RXmXmnkt0″ css=””][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″ icons_position=”left”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00pRrgCHK0c” css=””][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner]\nTurbulence and Pulse by Asher Gamedze
